Untrashing the planet, CBD gummies & sober lockdown
And it wouldn't be 2021 if I didn't mention COVID vaccines.
Well, hello! Here is my first Substack newsletter. If you’ve not heard about Substack yet, I suggest reading up on it pronto and get yourself acquainted with the ‘creator economy’. Good news for people who create content, not so good news for influencers and social media giants.
Speaking of social media:
I ended my long term relationship with Facebook
Finally! Facebook is no longer aligned to its original purpose (connection), and I’m relieved to no longer feel attached to it. While I still need an account for business purposes, I doubt I’ll be creating a personal profile again. If you’ve been thinking about ending it too, Kit Campoy’s blog post will tip you over the edge.
Investing in clean oceans and a plastic-free planet
I recently became a shareholder of a company called Zero Co, whose mission is to ‘untrash the planet’ by eliminating single-use plastic. They take plastic out of the ocean and landfill and use it to create non-toxic cleaning and beauty products.
I wrote more about Zero Co and how they work on Medium.
If you live in Australia, not only are you part of the worlds largest consumer of plastic per capita (consuming 59kg of plastic per person per year!), but you can reduce your plastic waste now by becoming a Zero Co customer.
Live elsewhere? With the success of their equity crowdfunding campaign, they plan to take the business globally, so heads up.
Tee-total and sipping on Seedlip
During Sydney’s latest lockdown, I hired a hunky personal trainer to kick my butt twice a week. I also decided to go tee-total and wouldn’t have been able to do it without Seedlip non-alcoholic botanical spirits. A single shot of their Garden 108 blend with a sugar-free tonic and a big squeeze of lime really hits the spot. Highly recommend.
Where are you getting your COVID info?
If you are still relying on mainstream news for COVID updates, it’s time to expand your source of information. If these two crazy years have taught us anything, media fuels fear, clickbaity headlines, and doesn’t always deliver accurate news.
I’ve been following several alternative sources. While I keep an open mind and am cautious of conspiracy theories, I’ve found a handful of resources I trust, including:
Dr Mercola’s Substack Newsletter - An inciteful newsletter of health studies and opinions (including banned articles) by one of the worlds leading health activists.
Chris Masterjohn - With a PHD in Nutritional Sciences, he constantly analyses the latest COVID studies and shares what he finds. Check out his recent post about Natural Immunity vs Vaccination.
The FLCCC Alliance - a group created by frontline medical workers providing info on treatment and prevention protocols.
And finally on this topic, if you still believe Ivermectin is a ‘horse dewormer’, please read this.
Experimenting with CBD Gummies
I ordered CBD gummies from Blessed CBD, and while disappointed to see ‘0% THC’ on the label (the chemical that makes you high), I thought I’d see if they make any difference to stress and sleep.
After two weeks of taking one per night, I can say the quality of my sleep didn’t improve much (bear in mind I have a toddler climbing into my bed every night). However, it did produce a relaxed feeling a few minutes after taking it, which was a fun (and tasty) way to wind down.
Berry Gummies (not the CBD kind)
I started making Berry Gummies when I accidentally bought Gelatin instead of bone broth powder. They’re now a healthy staple snack in my fridge as they’re so easy to make, and my son loves them.
(I’m not much of a cook either, so when I perfect a recipe, I like to brag!)
Recipe:
In a blender, whizz 1 cup of frozen berries, 1/2 cup of filtered water and juice from 1/2 a lemon.
Gently warm the liquid in a pan, making sure it doesn’t boil.
Add 2.5 tablespoons of grass-fed Gelatin (I buy Nutra Organics, Natural Gelatin) and whisk until there are no lumps (2-3 minutes).
Pour into a silicone ice tray and leave in the fridge for 2 hours (any longer, and I find they stick to the tray).
Take them out, pop the gummies into a container and store them back in the fridge. Enjoy!
All the best,
Joanna
